I've never been waxed at nkd before. What's the deal?
Prior to your first wax at nkd, your waxing therapist will have a quick chat with you in the privacy of the treatment room. She will only need to know basic information, such as have you had a wax before, how do you usually remove your hair, if you have particularly sensitive skin or any known allergies or if there’s anything else we need to know. This will enable nkd to choose the right type of wax for your skin and to advise you on the best aftercare. We will record all of your details in our database so we have them on record for next time you come. We do need you to keep us updated of any changes though — for example, if you are taking any new medication.
Your therapist will then explain the details of the treatment you have chosen and tell you what to do next, e.g. to what extent you should undress. She will leave the room for two minutes so that you can make yourself comfortable on the treatment couch before returning to work her magic.
Do I need to book an appointment or can I just walk in?
Located in the centre of Nottingham, it is easy to take 20 minutes out of your busy working or shopping schedule for an nkd treatment. We do operate a walk-in policy and because our therapists are so efficient in what they do, you’re never likely to be waiting long, even if they are treating another client when you come. However, we can’t guarantee that they’ll always be free, so you are advised to ring in advance and book an appointment, especially on a Saturday or if it’s a longer appointment time you need.
How do I find nkd?
nkd is located on Bridlesmith Walk (formerly known as King John’s Arcade). This is the covered shopping walkway that runs from Bridlesmith Gate (opposite Coast, next to Jack Wills) up to Fletchergate Car Park. We’re at the bottom of the steps, just down from The Walk café. Click here to see a map of exactly where we are.
Will my wax hurt?
We’re not going to lie to you; of course if you pull the hair out from its root it may hurt a little, and more so in some areas than others. But because all nkd therapists are trained in the very latest of techniques, because we use the finest-quality waxes that stick to the hair, not the skin, and because it’s what we do all day every day, you’ll probably find that it hurts a damn sight less than other waxes you may have had in the past.
Also, you’d expect us to say this, but the more you come, the less it will hurt (and that’s a fact).
How often will I need a wax?
The quality of the wax we use means that we can reach the shorter, finer hairs better than most other waxes. This means that you no longer have to wait and ‘grow’ your hair so it is long enough to be waxed again. Most people should be ready for another wax after 3 – 5 weeks, which is why we offer a generous 10% discount if you come back in that time.
New clients are best coming every 3 – 4 weeks for the first few times, until the hair growth starts to slow and come through at the same speed. Don’t worry if during that time the waxed area actually looks hairier than usual. This means that all hairs in the area are now in a similar growth cycle, which will make each wax more effective.
After that, you may only need to come and see us every 4 – 5 weeks as your hair becomes sparser and comes through at a slower rate. Don’t worry though — we’ll send you a text to remind you when you’re due another wax.
For best results, please don’t shave, tweeze or use hair removal creams between appointments!
I've got very sensitive skin, will this be a problem?
Absolutely not. Most of our waxes are hypo-allergenic and fragrance free anyway. Every new client at nkd will have a pre-wax consultation, during which we’ll ask about your skin type and other relevant medical details. If you do have sensitive skin, we’ll be doubly sure to use our most gentle products.
How long will my wax take?
Of course it depends what exactly you’re having done and the extent of your hair coverage, but we guarantee that you’ll be amazed by the efficiency with which nkd therapists work. As a general guideline for regular clients, we’d allow 10 minutes for your average basic bikini wax, 15 minutes for a half leg wax and around 20 minutes for a Brazilian or Hollywood.
First-time clients who are not regularly waxed may need to allow a little longer, and you need to account for the time it takes you to get dressed and undressed and pay/book your next appointment.
We will add 5 minutes on to your first appointment for a consultation, the details of which we will keep on file for your future visits.
What sort of wax do you use?
It depends on which area we are waxing, but rest assured we only ever use the best. For treatments such as Brazilians, Hollywoods, facial and under arm waxes we use the new hot “non-strip” wax, which is ideally suited for the job in hand. Hot wax sticks to the hair and not the skin so will not ‘pull’ as lesser waxes might, and it causes less breakages and damage to the hair thereby reducing the risk of ingrown hairs. Although the hot wax will feel pleasantly warm against your skin, it will be never be so hot as to be uncomfortable, so don’t worry about that.
For larger areas of the body, e.g. legs and arms, we will use strip wax, either applied in the traditional method with a spatula, or with the use of a roller. Here, warm wax is applied and then speedily removed with paper strips.
Most of our waxes are hypo-allergenic, although we stock even gentler products for those with particularly sensitive skin or certain allergies. Your nkd therapist will be able to talk you through the options.
I've never had a Brazilian or Hollywood wax before. What do I need to know?
As with every new client, you will have a quick consultation with your waxing therapist in the treatment room, during which she will explain about the treatment you have chosen to have.
The therapist will then leave you to undress your bottom half (and yes, for Brazilians and Hollywoods, that will include taking your knickers off!) and lie on the treatment couch. Your therapist will then come in, do her stuff and bingo — smooth as a baby’s bottom.
There will be cleansing wipes in the treatment room for you to use. For your own sake and that of your therapist, please do make sure that you arrive as clean and fresh as possible.
Please note that nkd carries out Brazilians and Hollywoods as they were meant to be done. This means that we remove all hair from the labia, perineum and anus, and either leave a ‘landing strip’ for a Brazilian (your choice how wide) or take absolutely everything for a Hollywood.
Disposable g-string knickers can be provided upon request although the treatment may take slightly longer. For standard bikini waxes, there is no need to remove your underwear.
Help, I've got my period! What do I do?
Worry not! As long as you’re wearing a tampon and you’re clean and fresh down there, this won’t be a problem.
How do I prevent ingrown hairs?
Scrub and rub would be our recommendation. In other words, exfoliate regularly and apply plenty of moisturiser. nkd sells aftercare packs which contain everything you need to prevent ingrown hairs, or you can buy individual products and specialist treatments from us with the peace of mind that they’re suitable for even the most delicate of areas (and if they are not, we’ll tell you). For detailed advice about the prevention of ingrown hairs, see the aftercare section.
Will my skin be sore afterwards?
It shouldn’t be no, but it is quite normal for a heat reaction to be seen on the skin for several hours following treatment. This may vary from a mild redness to a stronger skin reaction, including red dots on the waxed area for several hours. If nkd’s aftercare advice is followed the skin should return to normal within 24 hours.
Can I have a wax if I am pregnant?
Absolutely! Although your skin may be more sensitive than usual, our state-of-the-art waxes mean that the treatment will still be completely bearable. In fact, Brazilian and Hollywood waxes are now popular among pregnant ladies shortly before their due date.
